Partial BAH, BAH RC/Transit and BAH-DIFF (2026)
Three BAH rates do not depend on location. DTMO publishes them once a year as "non-locality" rates; the 2026 table is effective 1 January 2026.
BAH RC/Transit (BAH-RC/T)
A single national rate per grade, with and without dependents. DTMO lists two main uses: Reserve Component members on active duty for less than 30 days, and members in transit from select areas where no prior BAH rate exists. DTMO adjusts RC/T each year by the average change in housing costs.
BAH-Differential (BAH-DIFF)
The housing allowance for a member assigned to single-type government quarters who is authorized BAH solely because they pay child support. A member is not authorized BAH-DIFF if the monthly child support is less than the BAH-DIFF amount. Members who pay child support and live off base on the local economy are instead eligible for the with-dependents rate for their locality. BAH-DIFF amounts, originally calculated in 1997, are updated each year by the change in the basic pay tables.
Partial BAH
A small fixed monthly amount paid under 37 U.S.C. § 403(n) to members without dependents who live in government quarters and therefore do not receive full BAH. DTMO notes that partial rates are constant from year to year.
Eligibility rules are in the DoD Financial Management Regulation, Volume 7A, Chapter 26 (BAH-DIFF: paragraphs 260301 and 260504), which is the authority; your finance office decides individual cases.
